Meeting the Risk
Women who are low-income, justice-involved, of color, and/or use alcohol or illicit drugs are already at risk for negative birth outcomes. These risks increase when laws meant to protect pregnant women and their unborn children are used to make women criminally responsible for their fetus's well-being.
Substance abuse by pregnant women places their babies at risk for birth defects, behavioral problems and/or cognitive disabilities. These conditions may require costly treatment and have lifelong impact. 9 Months: Windows of Hope helps mothers stop using drugs and develop healthy lifestyles for both themselves and their babies, and builds community awareness and support. As many women also have histories of family trauma, the program works to empower them in knowing they have the wisdom and the skill to be good mothers. 9 Months is a program of Going Home Hawai'i, which assists Hawai'i Island men, women, and youth released from correctional institutions with reintegration into community life through employment, education, training and appropriate supportive services. |
